How to Track Passport Expiry the Easy Way
Most people know roughly when their passport expires — "sometime in 2028". That's exactly how a trip gets cancelled. Tracking a passport properly takes ten minutes once, and then almost no effort at all.
Step 1: find the real date
Open your passport to the photo page and look for Date of expiry. Write it down exactly — day, month and year. While you're there, note the Date of issue too; you'll need it for Europe (more on that below).
Step 2: track the dates that matter, not just the expiry
The expiry date is the last day your passport is valid — but for travel, it stops being useful well before that:
- Expiry minus 6 months: the last day you can arrive in the many countries that want six months' validity left.
- Expiry minus 3 months: the last day you can leave the Schengen area — which also needs your passport issued within the last 10 years.
- Expiry minus 9 months: a comfortable time to renew, keeping six months for travel and leaving room for processing.
Our free passport validity checker works all of these out from your expiry date, and tells you whether a specific trip is fine.
Step 3: pick a way to be reminded
- A calendar: add two events — "renew passport" at nine months and "last trip before renewal" at six. Simple, but easy to lose when you change phones.
- A spreadsheet: good for a whole family's passports in one place — as long as someone remembers to open it.
- A document app: reads the date for you and reminds you automatically, for everyone at once.
Step 4: do it for the whole family
Every passport in the house expires on its own schedule, and children's passports often last only five years. Put them all on one timeline with our free family document planner and export every date to your calendar in one go.
